- In their first cinematic adventure, Apache chief Winnetou and mountain man Old Shatterhand pursue a gang of murderous outlaws who will stop at nothing to find the legendary treasure of Silver Lake.
- The ancients tell that centuries ago a tribe lived in immense wealth. When the end of the tribe was near, the wise men sank the sacred treasure of their ancestors into the waters of a mysterious lake. The tribe died, but a legend was born. The legend of the treasure in the silver lake. Riding in the footsteps of the legend of the Silver Lake are also the Cornel (Arthur Brauss) and his men, a gang of bloodthirsty tramps. The Missouri-Blenter, a God-fearing farmer, stands in their way - and has to pay cruelly for it: the Cornel murders his family. Blenter himself is saved at the last moment: by Winnetou (Gojko Mitic), the brave chief of all Apaches. At the Black Bear River, Blenter meets not only the Cornel, but also Old Firehand (Horst Janson). The famous hunter is on his way to Silver Lake together with the engineer Ellen Patterson (Dolly Dollar) and Kleiner Bär ("Little Bear") from the Tonkawa tribe to mine valuable ores there. A bloody tomahawk hovers over the area they are passing through: the Utah chief Großer Wolf ("Big Wolf") has dug up the hatchet after white horse thieves rampaged through his village. He now wants to put every paleface to the stake - be they friend or foe. The English Lord Castlepool has no idea of such customs. He travels through the Wild West to experience adventure in the most comfortable way possible. He has hired a whimsical westerner, Tante Droll ("Auntie Droll"), as a guide who is familiar with the area. Droll is also on the Cornel's trail as a detective. For a very short time they even have the villain under their control, but he manages to escape. On the way to Silver Lake, Winnetou and Old Firehand have their hands full, because the Cornel is not afraid of any misdeed. He tries to burn down Butler's farm and rob the railway payroll in the village of Sheridan. When Winnetou and Old Firehand end up as prisoners in the Utah camp, their fight seems lost. But Großer Wolf greatly underestimates his opponents.
